Tamil Cine MD: G.Ramanathan - The colorful facet in his adaptations of Hindi cine music into Tamil...with improvisations !!

My personal active research of almost 35-40 years of Hindustani & Tamil cine music between 1931-64 or so can be deduced as under:

MD: G.Ramanathan imbibed 'a unique colorful facet' into his Tamil film songs by adapting them from Hindustani film songs over the aforesaid period,,,but, with a silver lining imparted in some form or the other. This silver lining enhanced the over melodic depth into the song in question in a new dimension. Not every average connoisseur could accept this statement  as digestible. Reasons vary depending upon the in-depth study / research in every aspect of melodic creativity is adhered with.

Hindi film : SHAMA ('46)  & Tamil film : INBAVALLI ('49) are 2 vivid examples.of video clips uploaded for your personal evaluation.

On scrutiny, one will notice that:

- there was a 3-year generation gap between the Bombay & Chennai films.

- Songs of Shama ('46) were an all-time hits as compared to the ones of Inbavalli ('49)

- the sound track version of the Hindi song is 03.27 mins compared to 03.32 mins of the Tamil one.

- the Hindi prelude is of 00.18 secs only while the Tamil prelude is of 01.22 mins  ( extra 00.54 secs)

- the Hindi song abruptly ends, while the Tamil one has a 'stylish, graceful end-prelude)

- both the versions, lyrics-wise have a poignant color of their own, more or less

- there is nothing much to comment upon the respective portions of rendition - very simple.

- the Hindi one has 1 pallavi + 2 antaras against 1 pallavi + 1 anu-pallavi only
  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is in the last one,  where GR has 'improvised the prelude admirably into a bit longer (+ 00.54 secs), with  soft, gentle beats-rhythm supplemented with those saxophone pieces in the 'extra prelude of 00.54 secs'

This speaks volumes of GR as an orchestrator of repute . Comparitively, GH was only a music composer while the orchestration used to be delegated to his fellow musician, V.Balsara..
